Went Roker Park Boxing Day 1989, saw Sunderland beat Oxford 1-0 Gabbiadini scored. Remember the chippy food being half the price of a London chip ship, no chanting during the game, just random people at random times shouting out 'Howay the lads' and that the people were really friendly.

Re: Sunderland (the city, not necessarily the football club)
I organised charity street collections with fellow students in my university days. One of the most memorable trips was to Sunderland. It was one of the most generous places we visited and collecting didn't feel like a chore at all. We felt very welcome and had a bumper day collecting for a cancer charity.

On one particular visit it was blowing an absolute gale. On the return journey our minibus was being blown from the inside lane to the outside lane on the M1 (they closed the motorway during our drive) during the collection day anything not nailled down was heading down the street - full dusbins, chairs, lost books, coats etc. You had to keep looking around to make sure nothing was coming to hit you in the back of the head. It was coming in gusts and I observed one poor lad trying to walk forwards, but actually moving backwards as the wind caught the hood of his coat.
It was absolutely the strongest wind I have ever experienced anywhere in the world by a country mile.

The locals response to the conditions while most of them were walking around in short sleeves was this: "Windy? This isn't windy! You should have been here last week!"

Roker Park had its own microclimate, borrowed from Siberia.

One year I went to see us play, it was a pleasant spring day in the town, and cold winter at Roker Park.

Only been there once to see us play at Roker Park early 90's. I can honestly say it is the coldest ( mind you it was February ) I have ever been at a football match.

My friend worked there for a year.

She was from London but got a really good job for a year based in Sunderland. She visited it to look for places to live. After looking around she chose to live in Newcastle and commute. Because who the fuck would choose to live in Sunderland?

This reminds me of Jeff Stelling's rant about Middlesbrough.

Went there once (stayed with friends) and it was a total dump.
Durham is a great City but Hartlepool takes the cake as the shittest town in the area.

I've only ever been there to watch football matches. There's some nice coastal villages like Seaham that are more worth your time if you are in the area.

Not as bad as Middlesborough, i stayed there twice for work. In a hotel that stunk, sticky carpets, shit beer and food and my window overlooked a sex shop.

Annabels nightclub, and they all think we (West Ham) are related to the Krays, the working mens clubs are superb value and it was hard to spend your money......all in the mid to late 90's though.....
